Wrapping up The 100 Burgundy Book Tour

Since my new book, The 100 Burgundy: Exceptional Wines for Your Cellar was released end of July, I’ve been in the midst of an intense and exciting book tour with ten events held around the world. A huge thank you to my publisher Assouline and to the venues that provided their space, time and created memorable Burgundy-themed events: Lucque s in Los Angeles, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, Hong Kong Club, Bookazine Hong Kong, Marriott Taipei, Resort World Sentosa, Mandarin Oriental Singapore, La Cabotte in London and Maison Assouline in London and at the Four Seasons NYC.

There are still six more book events schedule for the upcoming few months including Caves Legrand Paris, Athenaeum Beaune, Hyatt Beijing and Interwine Guangzhou. For more details, please visit Upcoming Events, watch the videos of the events here, and to order your own copy, click here.

As Vice-Chair of the Decanter Asia Wine Awards 2019, now in its 5th year, I was very happy to see gold medals being awarded to wines from Greece, India, Japan and Georgia; for full results click here. This is definitely the best wine competition in Asia and also the best judged by over 50 incredibly talented wine professionals mainly from Asia. Just after DAWA I flew to Italy where I was honored to receive the 2019 International Masi Prize Award for Wine Culture!

The first inaugural Wine Pinnacle Awards, a nomination-based global competition with a 54-member jury made of mostly Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers, was extremely well received last month. I am delighted that we recognized wines that normally slip through normal fee-based competitions – for full results view here.

I hope to see many of you this week at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair where Asia Wine Academy (AWA) is now in its 3rd year! As part of AWA’s program, I will be conducting two masterclasses on Cabernet Sauvignon from around the world and another two classes will be led by Yang Lu MS. To view the schedule and sign up for the classes, click here. On December 19th I will be conducting a horizontal of Richebourg including Domaine de la Romanee-Conti and Domaine Hudelot-Noellat at PIIN - for more details, click here. For most of November I will be in Burgundy and New York City so as always, I look forward to connecting with you via Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, WeChat or Weibo.

My Views

Tough Times for Hong Kong's Wine Market

In my nearly 26 years living in Hong Kong, I have never seen the city wracked in such turmoil since May 2019. For the city’s residents and fans, these are not just tough times, these are heart-breaking times. No one is more affected by the turbulence than those in the tourism, hospitality, F&B and wine industries. Read more

Asian's Love for Red Wines

I spent a week in February 2019 on a four-city tour with the Ningxia winery association. It is no surprise that the variety that is most widely planted is Cabernet Sauvignon... Read more

Californian Wines' Loss

All eyes are on the US-China trade war, not just bankers, traders and manufacturers, but also farmers and wine producers. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, in 2018, US wine exports dropped by 25%. This is at a time when Californian wines are at an impressive period of evolution and growth... Read more

Smart Buys

Top Amarones

Amarone is a very special wine that’s hard not to love. It is warm, generous and offers a big bear hug with plush tannins and chocolatey, mocha flavors. The Corvina grape is at the core of Amarone making up the majority of the blend, while Rondinella and Molinara play minor roles. According to Technical Director Andrea Dal Cin at Masi... Read more

Great Champagnes for the Holidays

I will be opening quite a lot of champagne in the coming months as we come to the end of the year wrapping up 2019 and preparing for 2020. I had the great fortune of spending a week in champagne earlier this year and returned with nearly 100 tasting notes! While the number of grower champagnes continue to increase and gain favor...
