Japan wins wine awards and builds diplomacy with sake

Although not usually recognised for its vineyards, Japan is attempting to shed stereotypes and make its mark in the wine world. Japanese wine recently won six silver and 25 bronze medals at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in May.Earth Timesreports that the Japanese are increasing efforts to meet a global wine market.

 

In the diplomatic world, Japanese foreign ministers are sticking to traditions and leading negotiations with sake.The Japan Timesreports that Japanese ministers are using sake to aid diplomacy. The chief of the Foreign Ministry’s Public Diplomacy Department, Kenjiro Moji, stated that sake helps to smooth conversation at diplomatic dinners.
