Best Dai Pai Dong in Hong Kong: From the Concierge of Langham Place

This June, Asian Palate introduces “From the Concierge”, a monthly feature on local dining recommendations from Asia’s leading hotels.  Asian Palate debuts “From the Concierge” with Langham Place as they lend their expertise in our search for the best dai pai dong in Hong Kong.  Two-star Michelin Chef Tsang Chiu King, the hotel’s sommelier Zach Yu, and Food and Beverage Manager Frankie Lau, share their picks for the most delicious street food in Hong Kong.

Located in the new Municipal Services Building, Chef Tsang highly recommends Sun Kam Yuen Dai Pai Dong ( 2/F, Tai Kok Tsui Municipal Services Building, Tai Kok Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong ).  “This dai pai dong is clean and also nice because of the air conditioning.  My family lives in Tai Kok Tsui so we love visiting this dai pai dong .”

Chef Tsang frequents Sun Kam Yeun Dai Pai Dong with his family during the holidays, as he is particularly fond of the seafood dishes.  “The seafood there is fresh.  Not only is it tasty and flavourful, but it’s also reasonably priced.” says Chef Tsang.  Signature dishes at Sun Kam Yeun are the deep-fried fresh squid with spicy pepper salt, and steamed eel with black bean sauce.

Zach Yu, the sommelier of Langham Place, also known as “The Wine Guy” of the hotel, prefers Lok Yuen Dai Pai Dong in Sha Tin ( Wo Che Estate Marketing, Sha Tin, Hong Kong ).  “I love the local and vibrant atmosphere in this dai pai dong .  It reminds of when I was a teenager.  The prices are quite reasonable and the food is fresh and delicious, especially the oysters.” Explains Yu.  “The best dishes at Lok Yuen dai pai dong are the deep-fried oysters, and deep-fried bean curd with spicy pepper salt.”

Langham Place Food and Beverage Manager Frankie Lau can be found enjoying the iron-pan-fried oyster cake, garlic bread, or minced pork with basil and chili at Amporn Thai Food in Kowloon City ( 3/F Kowloon City Municipal Services Building, Kowloon City, Hong Kong ).  “The Thai food here is incredibly authentic.  The food is always fresh and delicious, that’s why this dai pai dong is always packed with hungry customers.” says Lau.
